The most common head and neck injury in vehicle accidents without a direct head impact is the whiplash injury. Whiplash injury affects the tempero mandibular joint (TMJ) in around a third of cases, many of which go unreported to the solicitor as symptoms are not initially linked to the accident. If untreated, whiplash injury can lead to osteo-arthritis and other jaw joints problems in later life. All cases of whiplash injury affecting the neck should also be screened for TMJ injuries.
Common treatments include occlusal splint therapy and occlusal adjustment. Professor Tipton has written many articles on TMJ in the dental press and is regarded as an expert in this field click here to read his latest article from the Legal & Medical journal.
